The four sisters who are the focus of this account — Estie, Susie, Piri and Fritzi — grew up in idyllic circumstances in rural northern Romania in the early 20th century, emigrating to America after World War II via a harrowing, tragic journey that brought them through Nazi concentration and forced labor camps, refugee camps, serious illness, the high life of Havana,Cuba under Batista, and ultimately, as Castro’s revolution took hold, to New York and Miami.
